Whenever I do my paper round (in my own street) my cat starts following me around. It's quite funny how affectionate cats can be, especially when you hear everywhere that cats are assholes. Yeah, they don't go out of their way to help you when you're in trouble or anything, but it's not their fault their instinct tells them to stay away from danger. I think I get why so many people dislike cats so much. Cats can get agitated fast when being pet. They are ofcourse not able to tell you they are. I think a lot of people try to pet cats, without knowing how that particular cat (or cats in general) react when agitated. Think about it like this: when you get annoyed, you tell the person annoying you to stop. Cats show certain signs to express that; my cat starts wagging her tail, looking around just a little more frantically, and after a good while you learn to notice these signs. If you continue petting your cat after that, you're basicly teasing the cat; the cat's bound to get enough of your teasing sooner or later.

We also have another cat at home: this guy never gets enough of being pet. After a while he even starts licking your hand; I'm not sure if that's a sign of affection, but he really doesn't do anything besides licking (cat tongue is very tickly though). Next time you get attacked by a cat while petting it, you might consider it being your own fault.
